The Sports Studies Research Group (SSRG) was established in 2004, coinciding with the Olympic celebrations in Athens 2004. The SSRG develops the historical legacy of the UWS in the context of modern, contemporary issues in sport studies and science. One hundred years ago, at the 4th Olympic Forum in London, Lord Kinnaird of Paisley was a key member of the proceedings.
Developed by a unique range of researchers whose work spans across a multitude of disciplines, the SSRG aims to develop a fresh approach to sport-related research, by targeting areas of interst that are not established elsewhere in such depth and diversity. Some of our key topics of interest include the Olympic Movement, the Commonwealth Games, extreme sports, gene doping, fan cultures, sports injury, sports law, sports marketing. Our work is driven by an agenda to bring sport research to new areas of publishing and funding, which is reflected by the composition of our unit.
